Sweet Futures (2007) was a curatorial commission in Carlow (Ireland) funded by County Carlow’s ‘Visualise’ temporary arts scheme, as an advance programme to the opening of a new national-level contemporay art museum in the town. As curator, I invited artist ︎︎︎Sarah Browne to engage with socio-economic themes related to the town. Focusing on the recently closed sugar processing factory, formerly a major local employer, Browne produced a freely distributed art publication as a pastiche of travel or property brochures. Through the lens of sugar, Sweet Futures examined economic change, land use and value, and desire, working through parallel local and global strands. This was concieved curatorially as a partner project to ︎︎︎Hedgeschool.
